Women's Golf Club Length Chart: Do You Need Petite, Standard, or Tall Clubs?

One of the biggest hidden secrets in the golf industry is that most beginner women are playing golf clubs that are completely the wrong length.

When you walk into a sporting goods store or shop online, most boxed sets are labeled “Women’s Standard.” However, industry manufacturers design “Women’s Standard” clubs based on an average female height of roughly 5’6” to 5’7”. If you are 5’2” and swinging a standard club, the club is physically too long for you.

Playing clubs that are too long forces you to stand awkwardly, causes painful wrist strain, and is the #1 culprit behind topping the golf ball or hitting heavy “fat” shots into the dirt.

Before you spend hundreds of dollars on our favorite women’s beginner golf clubs, use this complete length guide to find your exact fit.

The Ultimate Women’s Golf Club Length Chart

The easiest way to determine your starting club size is based on your overall height in your normal golfing shoes.

Golfer HeightRecommended LengthBest Boxed Set Category
Under 5’0” (< 152 cm)-1.0” shorterDedicated “Petite” Sets
5’0” to 5’3” (152–160 cm)-0.5” to -1.0” shorterWomen’s “Petite” Sets
5’3” to 5’8” (160–173 cm)Standard LengthWomen’s Standard Sets
5’8” to 5’11” (173–180 cm)+0.5” to +1.0” longerWomen’s Tall / Men’s Senior
Over 5’11” (> 180 cm)+1.0” to +1.5” longerMen’s Regular / Custom Fit

IMPORTANT

If you fall into the 5’0” to 5’3” range, do not buy a Standard set expecting to “just choke down on the grip.” Choking down changes the overall weight balance (swing weight) of the club and makes the shaft feel much stiffer than it actually is!

The “Wrist-to-Floor” Secret (For Perfect Accuracy)

While overall height is a great baseline, human proportions vary. You might be 5’4” but have shorter arms or unusually long legs.

Professional club fitters use the Wrist-to-Floor Measurement to get 100% accuracy:

  1. Put on your normal golf shoes and stand on a hard, flat floor.
  2. Stand straight up with your shoulders relaxed and let your arms hang naturally at your sides.
  3. Have a friend measure the distance from the crease of your wrist (where your hand meets your forearm) straight down to the floor.
  • Under 29 inches: You definitely need Petite (-1 inch) clubs.
  • 29 to 32 inches: You fit perfectly into Women’s Standard clubs.
  • Over 32 inches: You need Tall (+0.5 to +1 inch) clubs.

3 Telltale Signs Your Current Clubs Are Too Long

If you already own a set of golf clubs and aren’t sure if they fit, take them to the driving range and look for these three mechanical red flags:

1. The Toe is Pointing to the Sky

When you get into your normal golf setup posture, look at the bottom (sole) of your iron. If the club is too long, the heel of the club will rest on the grass, but the front tip (the toe) will stick noticeably up in the air. This causes your shots to hook wildly to the left.

2. You Constantly Hit the Dirt Behind the Ball

Because the shaft is physically longer than your arm arc allows, the clubhead will bottom out early. If you take massive divots inches before the golf ball, your clubs are almost certainly too long.

3. Scuff Marks on the Heel

Examine the face of your driver or irons. If 80% of your ball marks and scuffs are clustered right next to the metal shaft (the heel) rather than the dead center, you are crowded by the club length.

What Should You Buy?

If you discover you need Petite clubs, boutique brands like Callaway (Reva Petite), Cobra (Fly-XL Petite), and Wilson (Magnolia Petite) sell incredible complete boxed sets designed specifically with shorter shafts and lighter swing weights out of the box.

Don’t force your body to adapt to the wrong equipment. Getting the right length will instantly unlock effortless distance and straight ball flights!
